Boca Raton Sports Medicine

Naples Sports Medicine

Sports medicine has for a long time been associated with athletes only. However, this unique approach to the treatment of injuries can benefit anyone. Medical personnel who specialize in sports medicine help all kinds of people to recover from injury, prevent future injury and improve athletic performance.

For minor injuries, the most common first aid procedure begins with applying ice packs to the injured area. This helps to reduce pain and diminish swelling. However, do not place the ice directly on the skin. In addition, compressing the injured area will help to reduce swelling. This may also be done alongside elastic wraps, air casts or splints. Elevating the injured part above heart level also helps to decrease swelling and pain.

Assessment and Diagnosis of Sports Injuries

We have a team of professional doctors who are highly trained and qualified to diagnose any injuries that you might have. Our medical equipments are high tech and well maintained to provide you with the best medical services.

Our Imaging and radiology department is well equipped to handle both X-Ray and MRI scans. X-Ray images indicate internal injuries like bone fractures, which are interpreted by our specialists. In addition, we bring together a highly specialized team to interpret X-ray and MRI images and provide an accurate diagnosis.

MRI technology enables our doctors to diagnose a wide range of injuries precisely. Sometimes we perform MRI scans after the X-ray to collect further information.

Common Sports Injuries/Conditions we treat

Shoulder

Extreme pain in shoulders while exercising, especially when playing sports such as basketball, tennis and gymnastics may be caused by torn ligaments or shoulder dislocation. Other shoulder injuries include rotator cuff injury, clavicle fractures or shoulder impingement. We provide conservative treatment for simple pain and injuries and also perform surgical treatment for chronic sports related injuries.

Spine and Neck

Spine and neck issues are some of the most crucial, demanding immediate attention. Our dedicated neurosurgeons and orthopedic doctors are available to solve a wide range of spinal and neck complications.

Arm, Elbow, and Hand

Our team of specialists prides itself with many years of experience handling arm, elbow and hand issues, be it a fracture, hand dislocation, carpal bone injuries, wrist dislocation among other critical injuries. We are experienced in identifying and treating various arm, hand and elbow problems.

Hip

The hip joint is more susceptible to injury because it carries a higher amount of load compared to other joints in the body. The hip may be affected by fractured femur bone, hip dislocation, hip fracture or labral tear among others. We recommend seeking immediate medical intervention for hip injuries to avoid causing further damage. Where needed, we offer rehabilitation support and physical therapy to quicken the recovery process.

Knee, Leg, and Foot

Knee and leg injuries can cause a lot of pain and long term problems if not dealt with appropriately. For example, the Anterior Cruciate Ligament(ACL) is a major stabilizing ligament in the knee. It has poor ability to heal when damaged. We also handle other knee and leg injuries like cartilage damage, dislocations, ankle fractures, athletic foot injuries, broken femur and much more. Treatment ranges from simple physical therapy to surgery and braces.

Common Sports Medicine Treatment/Surgeries

We make an effort to eliminate the need for orthopedic surgery as much as possible. Surgery is considered as the last option. It is used only in a serious injury or following persistent symptoms that have not been tackled by other treatment methods.

Some of the remedies we provide include repair to damaged cartilage, dislocations, tendonitis, ligament reconstruction, biceps tendonitis surgery, tendon repair, rotator cuff repair and fracture repair. While some procedures are simple and last a short while, those involving complex injuries take longer.

Measures to Prevent/reduce sports related injuries

  • Exercise regularly to strengthen muscles.
  • Do not over exercise. Also, gradually increase your exercise level gradually instead of starting with overstraining routines.
  • Maintain a healthy diet for strong muscles. Include foods such as fish rich in omega 3s, sweet potatoes, and low-fat yogurt to nourish your muscles.
  • Stay away from working out immediately after a meal.
  • Consult with your doctor to confirm that you are healthy and physically fit for the sport you are taking part in.
  • Perform warm-up exercises before sports activities and cool down exercises after to increase flexibility and reduce soft tissue injuries.
  • Ensure that you are appropriately dressed up in fitting protective gear for the related sport. Make use of protective gear such as mouth guards, elbow guards, facemasks, eye gear, athletic shoes, and gloves and so on.
  • Avoid exercising when you are injured or fatigued. Sometimes taking a break is equally productive.
  • Finally, be conversant with the rules of the sport you are taking part in. You don't want to be hurt because of ignorance.

Recovering from surgery depends mostly on the nature and severity of the injury, and the surgical procedure. We recommend an extended period of rest after surgery to allow the affected area to heal fast and fully. Physiotherapy may also be used to increase strength around the injury and extend the range of flexibility and movement.

Visit any of our centers to get professional assistance. Our doctors will provide appropriate advice on matters regarding surgical procedures only after thorough testing and diagnosis.
